How to ventilate during interior painting
Ventilation should move indoor air out and bring fresh air in without spreading dust to the rest of the building. Open windows where weather permits, use exhaust fans that discharge outdoors, and position portable fans so air flows toward the exit rather than deeper into occupied rooms.
Plan for people and products
- Read the paint, primer and cleaner labels before work begins.
- Keep children, pets and sensitive occupants away from the work zone.
- Never treat a dust mask as protection from solvent vapours.
- Continue ventilation for the duration stated by the manufacturer.
- Stop if anyone experiences symptoms and seek appropriate medical guidance.
Ventilation does not replace lead-safe containment or other hazard controls for older coatings.
